5S is a method for organizing work place, especially a shared workplace like shop floor, office, hospital, banks etc. and keeping the same organized, throughout. It is considered as a housekeeping methodology, however this is misleading, as 5S goes beyond it. 5S name is derived from five Japanese words which are Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, Shitsuke.
How does 5S Work?
You have to start with 1st S (Seiri) and then follow subsequent Ss in the same order.
This set of principles is the starting point for all manner of improvement activities. It is the first step for problem solving or waste elimination in lean manufacturing or service. After all, making the problems visible is the logical first step before one is able to see the problem and embark on the solutions
Take it as a great projects, implement 5S as an organisation-wide culture and you will discover that there is more to 5S than meets the eye!
